Collocation là cách thức các từ kết hợp với nhau trong một ngôn ngữ nhằm tạo ra lời nói và câu viết tự nhiên. Chẳng hạn make/ repeat/ correct/ fix a mistake, take a bath hoặc have a shower.
Có thể các bạn thường gặp chúng nhưng không nhận ra chúng vốn được kết hợp như vậy. Collocation quan trọng vì chúng chiếm tỷ lệ lớn trong tiếng Anh hằng ngày. Vì vậy việc lựa chọn đúng cụm từ giúp người học diễn đạt một cách tự nhiên, đa dạng và dễ hiểu như người bản xứ. Chúng ta không thể tùy tiện kết hợp các từ với nhau. Do vậy nếu bạn muốn dùng đúng cụm từ, chỉ có cách học thuộc cả cụm collocation thôi!

Đây là một ví dụ cụ thể: Hầu hết người Anh bản địa sử dụng từ heavy rainy (mưa nặng hạt) và cho rằng từ heavy phải kết hợp với rain thì mới thích hợp. Cũng tương tự, người Việt chúng ta có lái xe đạp, lái ô tô hoặc lái máy bay chứ không ai nói lái ngựa cả. Mặc dù chính chúng ta cũng không hiểu tại sao. Quay trở lại ví dụ trên, nếu bạn áp dụng quy tắc tương đồng, từ heavy rain (mưa lớn) mà suy ra dùng heavy wind để diễn tả gió lớn thì sẽ rất buồn cười. Để diễn tả gió lớn, người bản xứ dùng strong wind. Một ví dụ khác: Một số từ được kết hợp với nhau theo một trật tự riêng. Người ta luôn nói “Ladies and Gentlemen”, “right or wrong”. Không ai nói “Gentlemen and Ladies” hay “wrong or right”.

1. Tobe the key to something: Là yếu tố quan trọng nhất trong cái gì
Ex: In fact, good mental health is the key to people’s well-being.
2. to be more prone to something: dễ bị làm sao đó
Ex: Children who are engrossed in watching television in lieu of playing outdoor games, are more prone to obesity
Trong này có từ in lieu of = instead of, tobe engrossed in = attracted to something
3. mature enough to be self-reliant: đủ trưởng thành để sống độc lập. Từ này hay hơn rất rất nhiều so với từ independent nhé
Ex:If they finish high school, they will be mature enough to be self-reliant on their own income
4. An indispensable part: Là 1 phần không thể thiếu được
Ex: This opinion is due to the belief that a constant flow of income is an indispensable part of fulfilling one’s life.
5. advance one’s career: thăng tiến nhanh trong sự nghiệp
Ex: a person who chooses to get a job instead of studying higher is likely to advance their career
6. plays an integral part : đóng vai trò thiết yếu
Ex: a wage plays an integral part to guarantee the current quality of life
7. reach a wide audience: tiếp cận số đông khán giả
Ex: For marketing companies, viral advertising is perfect because it reaches a wide audience and may cost very little to get started.
8. draw inspiration: tạo cảm hứng
Ex: Interesting programs on television can help young people to draw inspiration and easily access a world of knowledge
9. a blend of : sự kết hợp, pha trộn
EX:The result is a rich blend of people, cultures and lifestyles
10. chase the top jobs: theo đuổi những công việc tốt hàng đầu
Ex: People would be well-advised to get a degree as hundreds of applicants often chase the top jobs
11. keep their eyes glued to screens: dán mắt vào màn hình
Ex: When people keep their eyes glued to screens for several hours, waves from computers and wifi devices may cause headaches
12. pursue higher education: theo đuổi bậc giáo dục cao hơn
Ex:The first reason is that the living standards of local citizens will increase. They will have more chances to get well-paid jobs. This may lead to parents having more money to support their families and encouraging their children to pursue higher education
13. depict the affection of mass media: mô tả những tác động của phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng
Ex: The globalization is a good instance to depict the affection of mass media, because individuals can see what is happening in other countries.
14. make great inroads into : xâm nhập lớn vào
Ex:The development of news media has been making great inroads into the lives of all people.
give a competitive advantage of learning :mang lại một lợi thế cạnh tranh của việc học
Ex:People around the world want to learn English because it can give a competitive advantage of learning a language.
15. tell inmost feelings: nói lên nỗi lòng
Ex: Andrew’s writing is wonderful. He writes things and tells inmost feelings that a lot of Viet Kieu want to say but can’t find words.
16. get to the top: Đạt đến đỉnh cao, vươn lên đỉnh cao
Ex: Ngo Bao Chau, who got to the top of his profession in 2010 with Fields prize, has a true love with maths which is reflected in his latest novel.
17. deliver message to people: mang thông tin tới cho mọi người
Ex: In 490 BC Pheidippides ran 42 km from the battle of Marathon to tell about the victory over the Persians, and died just afterdelivering his message
18. moral decline: Sự suy đồi về đạo đức
Ex: Vietnamese people see media aiding moral decline after the return of a comedian who was convicted in the US
19. set alarm bells: gióng lên hồi chuông; tạo nên sự cảnh báo
Ex: The arguments relating to Doan Ngoc Hai have set alarm bells ringing about the state officials’sense of responsibility and law-abidingness
20. more fun than a barrel of monkeys: rất vui và thú vị
Ex: I like to watch Ellen ‘s shows because they are more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
