Để làm tốt reading, một điều bạn cần master là khả năng tìm keywords. Các câu hỏi trong reading đều chứa keywords, và trong bài đọc sẽ có các diễn đạt tương đương với các keywords trong câu hỏi. Các bạn cần phải nắm rõ 02 loại keywords trong reading như sau.

Keywords loại 1: không thể paraphrase được
Đây là những từ khóa đặc biệt. Chúng sẽ không thể bị paraphrase, và vì vậy nhất định sẽ xuất hiện ở đâu đó trong bài đọc. Loại từ khóa này giúp chúng ta nhanh chóng xác định phần thông tin có liên quan đến đáp án. Keywords loại 1 gồm có:
- Tên riêng
Ví dụ: John, Peter, New York, Samsung Galaxy
- Ngày tháng năm
- Thuật ngữ
Ví dụ: cancer, inflation, interest rate
Keywords loại 2: có thể paraphrase
Đây là những từ khóa có thể bị paraphrase, vì vậy từ khóa trong câu hỏi sẽ không giống từ khóa tương ứng trong bài đọc.
Một số cách paraphrase phổ biến:
- Dùng diễn đạt tương đương
Ví dụ:
University students = those who study in college
- Dùng phương pháp “chung chung – cụ thể”
Đây là phương pháp mà người viết sẽ dùng một diễn đạt chung chung để paraphrase một diễn đạt cụ thể, hoặc ngược lại.
>Ví dụ:
Câu hỏi có cụm từ ‘soft drinks’, thì rất có thể diễn đạt tương đương trong passage là ‘Pepsi and Coke’
Câu hỏi có cụm từ ‘junk food’, thì rất có thể diễn đạt tương đương trong passage là ‘hamburgers and instant noodles’
- Dùng pronouns (phương pháp referencing trong writing)
Ví dụ:
Technology plays an important role in economic development. It enables workers to be more productive.
–> Ở đây technology được paraphrase thành it
Some university subjects may be useless. Therefore, it is a waste of time to learn them.
–> Ở đây subjects được paraphrase thành them.
- Dùng grammar (thay đổi từ loại hoặc thay đổi cấu trúc câu)
Ví dụ:
People who try to pursue their goals may feel frustrated sometimes.
= The pursuit of goals may be frustrating sometimes.
I want to contribute to my company.
= I want to make contributions to my company.
Ứng dụng phương pháp keywords vào IELTS reading
Để làm ví dụ cho các bạn, mình sẽ trích một đoạn text trong bài đọc và phần câu hỏi như sau.

Only a small number of tree species have the genetic capacity to grow really big. The mightiest are native to North America, but big trees grow all over the globe, from the tropics to the boreal forests of the high latitudes. To achieve giant stature, a tree needs three things: the right place to establish its seedling, good growing conditions and lots of time with low adult mortality. Disrupt any of these, and you can lose your biggest trees.
